How to Responsibly Include Your Dog in Outdoor Recreation

Bringing your dog with you on your adventures outdoors can be a blast. To make sure you and your pup enjoy all the benefits of outdoor recreation, its important to have a plan. Read on for our tips on how to make sure you, your dog, wildlife, and others can have a safe and fun time in the great outdoors.

Life Jackets Save Lives

You’ve probably heard us say this a thousand times – good! For humans and canines alike, life jackets can quite literally be the difference between life and death. When buying a life jacket for your pet, be sure to do your research, select an appropriate size, and buy from a reputable source. When you’re on the water, make sure your dog (and you!) has their life jacket on at all times.

Follow Leash Rules

For the safety of your pet and others, know and follow leashing rules wherever you are recreating. These can be found online or posted at the location. If you can’t find them, it’s safest to assume leashes are required. Even if your pet is friendly and harmless, you don’t know if others are.

Come Prepared

Plan according to you adventure. Are you kayaking on the Saluda? Make sure your dog has a life jacket. Taking a walk under the summer sun? Consider booties to protect their paw pads from the scorching pavement.  No matter your adventure, make sure to pack plenty of water for you and your pet, and bring poop bags! Picking up after your dog ensures that animals will continue being allowed in public spaces.

Know Your Dog

Keep in mind that not every dog is fit for every adventure. Consider your furry friend’s age, health conditions, and temperament before bringing them along. Exercise is great, but you don’t want to over-exert you pet.

Be mindful of others (people and animals), follow rules, and come prepared and you should have a great time. Dogs are welcome on our guided canoe tours of Congaree National Park as well as our tubing trips, but keep in mind that these activities can be 3+ hours. Owners must provide doggy lifejackets for both trips.
