Cause and Effect: Offer Support During #MidlandsGives

This year marks a decade of giving to local Midlands nonprofits through the annual Midlands Gives event. Midlands Gives educates locals on the missions of the area’s many great nonprofits, and makes donating simple through their easy-to-navigate website.

Consider donating to some of our favorite nonprofits below during the 10th annual Midlands Gives, on May 2nd 2023.

Canoeing for Kids

Canoeing for Kids recognizes the all of the benefits that outdoor recreation does for children. Since 1993 they have encouraged teamwork, self-confidence, and awareness and conservation of nature through paddling adventures.

Their mission: “To provide free canoeing and kayaking trips for underprivileged children.”

The River Alliance

The River Alliance is responsible for the Three Rivers Greenway, aka all of the riverwalks in the area. For decades, they have advocated for more and better river access for all.

Their mission: “To help the regional community become more engaged with the Broad, Saluda and Congaree Rivers by making the rivers accessible to everyone.”

The Congaree Riverkeeper

The Congaree Riverkeeper plays an essential role in ensuring that our local rivers remain safe for humans, animals, and plants alike. From organizing river cleanups to meeting state house officials about environmental policy, the Riverkeeper does it all.

Their mission: “We work to protect and improve water quality, wildlife habitat, and recreation on the Congaree, Lower Saluda, and Lower Broad Rivers through advocacy, education, and enforcement of environmental laws.”

Friends of Congaree Swamp

Friends of Congaree Swamp is an invaluable resource to South Carolina’s only national park: Congaree. Federal funding for the park is extremely limited, so the Friends group works tirelessly to support conservation projects, educate visitors, and fund research.

Their mission: “Increase recognition, public awareness, and appreciation of Congaree National Park as a resource of local, national, and international significance; Protect and restore the ecological systems and natural beauty of the park, and seek to maintain compatible land uses outside the park; Enhance educational, interpretive, and research opportunities relating to the natural heritage and historical heritage of the park and its environs; Support the park through advocacy, service, and fundraising.”

West Columbia Beautification Foundation

The West Columbia Beautification Foundation works with the City of West Columbia to make beautification projects become a reality, creating a daily impact on locals’ lives and a beautiful city for tourists to visit.

Their mission: “The West Columbia Beautification Foundation is committed to redefining West Columbia as an impressive and attractive place to live, work, or visit by involving the entire community in positive beautification efforts.”

Keep the Midlands Beautiful

Keep the Midlands Beautiful provides local groups and individuals with the tools to help our community thrive, including training, litter pickup tools (trash bags, grabbers, etc.), trash removal services, and more.

Their mission: “To engage, inspire, and educate Midlands citizens to invest in the community through litter prevention, recycling, and beautification initiatives.”
