Long ago are the days of Columbia being a “daily detour”. Now, we ARE the destination. Whether it’s for a weekend getaway or a staycation in your own city, Columbia, SC has a little something for everyone.

Look no further for the perfect Memorial Day Weekend Itinerary in Soda City.

Saturday May 27

Start off with the South Carolina Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival taking place at the South Carolina State Fair Grounds from 12:00-5:00 PM. Dozens of local favorite food trucks will be there serving up delicious snacks and over 50+ different types of craft beer. Tickets range from $5-$50 and make sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets to have some fun in the sun.

After your belly is full and you’ve imbibed some liquid courage, head on over to the TiffanyJ : Solbird Sessions Live! Album Recording Concert to soak in some music. Be a part of the audience during this live recording for her 3rd album releasing later this fall.

Sunday May 28

Take a trip back through time, and discover the rich history of South Carolina’s art during the “Carolina in the Collection” public tour at the Columbia Museum of Art. “Learn about the Charleston Renaissance, Catawba pottery, and artists right here in Columbia while you explore works by Osamu Kobayashi, Richard Samuel Roberts, Frank Lloyd Wright, and more.” This event is free for members or the price of admission.

Do you know why Columbia’s baseball team is called the Fireflies? Our team’s namesake comes from the synchronous fireflies located at Congaree National Park. Similar to the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies, this natural phenomenom only happens once a year and is so popular, a lottery system has been put in place to sustainably manage the growing crowds.

No worries if you didn’t score a lottery ticket to the synchronous fireflies viewing, you can still get a ticket to watch the Fireflies baseball game at Segra Park. Root for the hometeam as the Columbia Fireflies take on the Charleston Riverdogs.

Monday May 29

It’s not a trip to the Three Rivers Region without going down the river. Round out your holiday weekend, and catch Palmetto Outdoor’s 12:00 tubing shuttle. Float down a mix of whitewater rapids and calm water floating, under a canopy of Spanish Moss. Make sure to take some pictures of the elusive Rocky Shoals Spider Lily, a special flower that only blooms once a year in shallow, rocky areas of the river. Remember- take only pictures, leave only memories.

If you’ve ever talked to Mike Mayo, the owner of Palmetto Outdoor, you’ve likely heard the phrase “river hunger: it’s a real thing”. Post tubing trip, your group will be ravenous and looking for something to cure that river hunger. Right up the road from the West Columbia Riverwalk, is WECO Bottle and Biergarten a local hangout with rotating taps and food trucks. There’s plenty of outdoor space, perfect for families or four legged friends.

No matter what you choose, your adventure awaits in the Palmetto State!
